Pendleton, S.C. - Jennifer Judge shot her second straight 79 in the final round of the Boscobel Invitational Sunday at Boscobel Golf and Country Club. The effort was good enough to allow the junior to finish in a tie for 10th in the individual standings.
Upstate also turned in a solid day as a team, finishing with a 330 to improve its score by five strokes over Saturday's first round. The effort allowed Upstate to move up a position in the team standings to finish sixth. While Judge and Cheryl Lo equaled their performances from Saturday, Johanna Ebenhag, Marrisa Clontz and Natalie Buch all improved their scores to help the Spartan cause.
"I was pleased that the team fought to do better than it had yesterday," said Upstate assistant coach Sandy Halkett. "We knew that the three through five players had the best opportunity to lower their scores. All three players did and made the difference in us being able to lower our team score from the first round."
Wofford, the host of the tournament, shot its second straight 304 to take the team championship with a 608 total. Gardner-Webb finished second at 627 and was followed by Appalachian State (631), Presbyterian (649), Mercer (656), Upstate (665) and Anderson (674).
Judge's performance was made all the more remarkable due to the physical toll she took during the tournament. She suffered a sprained ankle in the practice round and played with her ankle heavily taped during both tournament rounds. As the players loaded up the team van to head to the course Sunday morning, the back hatch fell on her head. The trainer on site at the course evaluated her and cleared her to participate in the round.
"We didn't know if Jennifer would even be able to go," said Halkett. "She was obviously in pain, but wanted to give it a go. She is a competitor and played a steady round of golf."
Judge finished with a 158 total to finish in a tie for 10th to lead the Spartans. Lo tallied her second straight 80 and finished tied for 13th with a 160 total. Ebenhag added a solid 84 to improve her score by two strokes over Saturday's round. She finished 32nd in the tournament. Buch rallied to shoot an 87 Sunday, five shots better than her Saturday round, and finished tied for 38th with teammate Marissa Clontz. Clontz finished with an 89, one shot better than her round on Saturday.
Wofford's Sarah Herbert won the tournament championship with a 148 total.
Upstate will end the fall season at the Holiday Inn Express/CFSC Classic Nov. 2-3 in DeLand, Fla.
"What we would like to see as we head to the final tournament of the fall is to start the tournament ahead of the game and not having to fight from behind," said Halkett. "It would be good to post solid scores in the first round and then improve from there."
