Waynesville, N.C. - With rain pouring down and making the course unplayable, the final round of the Great Smokies Intercollegiate hosted by Western Carolina at the Waynesville Golf Resort was cancelled Sunday, ending the tournament after just one round. Upstate claimed 20th place in the tournament standings.
With the final round cancelled Sunday, the tournament was concluded with the results from Saturday's first round standing as the final tournament scores. Upstate shot a 320 and took 20th place in the 23-team field.
Jennifer Judge turned in a strong 74 Saturday to lead Upstate. A sophomore from Hurley, Miss., she was 1-under-par on the par-3's and birdied two of her last four holes to finish tied for 25th.
Upstate opened the 2009-10 season with four new players in the lineup after graduating five seniors from last year's team. In addition to Judge, newcomer Cheryl Lo finished the tournament tied for 58th after a 78 Saturday. Johanna Ebenhag was the third-lowest Upstate golfer in the tournament with an 81. Natalie Buch and Summer Wall each carded an 87 to round out the scoring for the Spartans.
Elon and host Western Carolina each shot a 286 to tie for the tournament championship. William & Mary was third after a 288 and was followed by Radford (299), Charleston Southern (300), Old Dominion (302), Saint Leo (304), Western Kentucky (305), Tennessee Tech (305) and Winthrop (305) in the top 10.
Austin Peay State, Gardner-Webb and Belmont each shot a 306 to tie for 11th. Presbyterian shot a 307 in 14th place and was followed by Bowling Green State (311), Savannah College of Art & Design (311), High Point (312), Alabama-Birmingham (314), Appalachian State (316), Upstate (320), The Citadel (326), S.C. State (328) and Mobile (328).
Three players tied for the individual championship. Elon's Tara McFadden, Western Carolina's Malin Jansson and Wiliiam & Mary's Caroline Sweet shot a 3-under-par 69 Saturday to tie for the tournament title.
