SPARTANBURG, S.C. – After picking up its first win of the 2011 campaign, the USC Upstate women's soccer team begins a three-match road swing when it travels to Georgia Southern Friday for a 4 p.m. match.
The Eagles own a 1-0 advantage in the all-time series after claiming a 3-0 victory in Spartanburg a season ago. Georgia Southern scored goals in the 34th- and 48th-minutes with the third goal coming in the 65th-minute when the ball bounced off of an Upstate player and into the back of the net.
After Friday's match, the Spartans will travel to Clinton, S.C., for a Sunday matinee at Presbyterian College. The Blue Hose own a 4-0 advantage in the all-time series; however the two squads have not faced each other since making the move to Division I.

• Katelyn Allen scored what proved to be the game-winner against Alabama State when she scored on a header off of Kayli Moore's corner kick in the 28th-minute.
• Brianne Marcell made her first appearance of the 2011 campaign as she started the second half against Alabama State. It took her just 10:18 to record her first collegiate goal.

Looking Back at Alabama State
Upstate struck first as Kayli Moore sent her corner kick into the box and Katelyn Allen put her header in the back of the net, giving the Spartans a 1-0 advantage in the 28th-minute. The Spartans went ahead 2-0 when Calmeyn took a pass from Katrina Spinner-Wilson and scored from the top of the box. Calmeyn's first goal of 2011 allowed Upstate to carry a two-goal lead into the locker room at halftime.
In the second half, the Spartans exploded for four goals, two of which came off of Calmeyn's foot. Brianne Marcell, logging her first minutes of the season, scored in the 56th-minute to put Upstate in front 3-0. Marcell was assisted on her first collegiate goal by Katrina Savoy.
Calmeyn scored her second and third goals of the contest in a span of just 1:59 as the Spartans increased their lead to 5-0. Calmeyn scored in the 64th- and 66th-minutes to record the first hat trick for the Spartans of the Division I era and just the third hat trick in program history. Stefany Saura (Raleigh, N.C.) recorded an assist on Calmeyn's goal at the 63:06 mark. Upstate tacked on its sixth and final goal of the contest when Savoy scored from inside the box on a pass from Spinner-Wilson, her second assist of the match.
Sarah Plantz earned the win and made one save in the first 45 minutes of the match. Rachel Collins played the second half and tallied three saves. ASU goalie Maressa Gordon recorded six saves on Sunday.
Upstate led the way in shots (16-9), shots on-goal (12-4) and corners (11-2). The Spartans committed eight fouls and were called offsides seven times, while the Lady Hornets had four falls and three offsides penalties.
Looking Back at Winthrop
The Spartans went on the attack early as Michelle Calmeyn took three shots in the first 7:42 of play. Two of Calmeyn's attempts were saved by Winthrop keeper, Sarah Schippers. Winthrop (2-3-0) scored the lone goal of the first period when Krystyna Freda scored from the right side on an assist from Rachel Webster.
In the second half, it was all Winthrop as the Eagles tallied five goals in the final frame. Allie VandeWater scored less than two minutes into the half as she beat recently inserted goalie Rachel Collins.
Winthrop pushed the lead to 3-0 when Freda scored her second goal of the match in the 52nd-minute. She was again the recipient of a pass from Webster. The Eagles scored in the 63rd-, 70th- and 85th-minutes to claim the 6-0 win on Friday night.
Winthrop led the way in shots (20-12), shots on-goal (16-5) and corner kicks (7-1). Upstate tallied a total of 10 saves in the match as Sarah Plantz recorded six and Collins posted four. Winthrop saved five Spartan shots.
Homefield Hat Trick
Not only did Michelle Calmeyn score her first collegiate goal against Alabama State (Sept. 11, 2011), she recorded a hat trick, the program's first in nearly 10 years. Calmeyn joins Thea Moen as the only women's soccer players to record a hat trick. Moen accomplished the feat twice as she scored three goals against Mars Hill (Sept. 8, 2001) and four goals against Clayton State (Oct. 23, 2001).
Calmeyn's three goals are the most in school-history and tied for second-most in a single match in program history. Meanwhile, her six points are tied for the most in a single match (D-I era) and she is tied for second in program history.
Renee's Rookies
Aside from sophomore Kayli Moore's assist against Alabama State (Sept. 11, 2011), it was the Upstate freshman that guided the Spartans to the 6-0 victory over the Lady Hornets. Michelle Calmeyn notched a hat trick (32', 64', 66') while Katelyn Allen (28'), Brianne Marcell (56') and Katrina Savoy (87') also scored in the match. Katrina Spinner-Wilson tallied two assists in the match while Katrina Savoy and Stefany Saura recorded one assist each.
