College Sports Madness Weekly Selections
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – After recording 21 points and 16 rebounds over the last two games and leading the USC Upstate men's basketball team to a pair of wins, junior forward Jodd Maxey has been named the College Sports Madness A-Sun Player of the Week as announced by the website this afternoon.
Maxey has been on the brink of his first collegiate double-double the last two games, scoring 13 points and adding nine rebounds in a 19-point win over Hampton, before coming back in Upstate's A-Sun opener at Northern Kentucky and scoring nine points to go along with seven rebounds. The Spartans won their fourth straight A-Sun opener with the comeback win on the road.
"Jodd has made an improvement in his play here lately, particularly from a consistency standpoint," said Upstate head coach Eddie Payne. "He has been getting his points and rebounds, but he has also been more active defensively."
The junior rose up and blocked three shots at Northern Kentucky, bringing his season total to 20 to sit tied for second in the league with 1.4 blocked shots per contest.
"He has blocked some good shots, but that is another characteristic of him getting his hands on the ball when he is on defense," Payne continued. "Between blocked shots, deflections and tipped balls he is a disruptive force defensively."
Maxey and the Spartans will look to improve to 2-0 in league play for the second straight season when they take on Lipscomb University this evening in Nashville, Tenn. Tip-off against the Bison inside Allen Arena is slated for 6 p.m. EST.
