Jacksonville, Fla. – Rachel Reiling shot rounds of 77 and 80 to lead the USC Upstate women's golf team on the first day of the JU Classic Monday afternoon at the Marsh Landing Country Club.
Reiling shot a 77 in the first round and an 80 in the second round to total 157, three strokes better than the next closest Spartan. Upstate played solid golf for most of both rounds, but key holes with high scores cost the Spartans on the day. Upstate shot rounds of 318 and 326 and is 12th heading into Tuesday's final round.
"Today was frustrating in that we played about eight hours of good golf. We needed to play 10 hours or so of good golf," said Upstate head coach Todd Lawton. "Our bad holes didn't come at one particular time. It's a matter of fact that every one of our players had a couple of bad holes in each round that cost us a lot of shots. We've got to get better with our misses. Tomorrow is an opportunity to renew our confidence in staying in the moment over each shot."
College of Charleston shot rounds of 297 and 293 to take the lead after the first day with a 590 total. The Cougars lead the tournament by 12 strokes over North Florida (602). Stetson is third at 604 and is followed by Daytona State (606), Wofford (607), Troy (608), Jacksonville (609), High Point (614), Winthrop (616), College of Charleston "B" (630), Florida Atlantic (643) and Upstate (644).
Reiling posted the best score in each round for Upstate and owns a 157 total after 36 holes. Take away a few bad holes and she could have found herself much higher on the leaderboard. She stands tied for 39th to lead the Spartan cause.
"Rachel led us today and could have been very strong," said Lawton. "She had a three hole stretch early in her second round that caused her to lose most of her shots to par, but I am proud she finished with lots of pars and a couple of birdies."
Alea Hawkins carded rounds of 78 and 81 to stand tied for 45th with a 159 total heading into the final round. Amanda Hall shot rounds of 80 and 83 for a 163 total. Brittany Lowe opened with an 83 and shaved a stroke off her score for an 82 in the second for a 165 total. Malika Allie carded rounds of 87 and 88 for a 175 total.
Florida Atlantic's Jacqueline Shelly shot rounds of 70 and 73 and owns the overnight lead by a stroke with a 143 total.
