Jacksonville, Fla. – Sidney Dermody opened the JU Classic with a 75 in the first round and Rachel Reiling turned in a solid 73 in the second round to lead the USC Upstate women's golf team on the first day of the JU Classic at Marsh Landing Country Club Monday afternoon.
Upstate opened the tournament with a 315 and shot a 312 in the second round to stand 12th with a 627 total heading into Tuesday's final round.
The 315 in the first round is tied for the third-lowest round of the season, matching the 315 carded in the second round of the Great Smokies Intercollegiate on Sept. 14. The Spartans counted scores of 75 from Dermody, 79 from Malika Allie, 80 from Reiling and 81 from Payton Culler. It marked the fifth straight round that Dermody turned in the lowest score on the team. She was even-par through 10 holes before finishing with a 75.
Reiling was simply outstanding in the second round. She birdied two holes on the front nine and played the front at even-par. She made eight pars on the back nine, playing the back at 1-over to record a 73. It is also the lowest round of her career at Upstate. Upstate counted her score as well as a 76 from Dermody, 80 from Culler and 83 from Allea Hawkins to shoot 312, which is the second best round of the season for the Spartans. With Hawkins' round counting in the second round, Upstate used at least one score from all five players on Monday. Dermody is tied for 26th with a 151 total, while Reiling is tied for 32nd at 153.
Coastal Carolina leads the tournament with a 584 total and is followed on the leaderboard by Daytona State (593), North Florida (595), Charleston Southern (599), Boston U. (599), Troy (600), Seminole State (606), Jacksonville (607), Maryland (610), Western Carolina (618), Stetson (622), Upstate (627), McNeese State (630) and Florida Atlantic (641). Coastal Carolina's Marissa Hinchman leads the tournament by one stroke with a 140 total.
"I am really proud of Rachel and the way she came back in her second round today," said Upstate head coach Todd Lawton. "She really stayed positive and made some good putts down the stretch. Sindey played with the tournament leader today after playing with last week's winner at the CSU Wendy's Invitational and held her own both times. She's really maturing on the course and playing well.
"Overall, we lost a few shots here and there, but everyone contributed today. I know out best is out there with this team and that is exciting. To make such a dramatic improvement in our scores here over last year is something for them to be proud of." Last year, Upstate stood at 644 after 36 holes. The Spartans improved that score by 17 strokes this year.
Upstate made nine birdies in the first round with Reiling leading the way with three. Dermody and Culler each converted two. The Spartans added three birdies in the second round to take the tournament total to 11 over 36 holes. Reiling posted two of the three birdies for Upstate in the second round.
