Jacobs Collects First-Place Performance to Lead Upstate at Winthrop Invitational

Rock Hill, S.C. – Alexis Jacobs recorded the second victory of her Upstate career in the shot put on Friday to lead the Spartans track and field team during day two of the Winthrop Invitational from Irwin Belk Track.
Jacobs won the shot put event last season at the Charlotte Invitational and added to her total this evening by holding off Ohio's Jordan Porter by just .05 meters. The senior thrower, who was named A-Sun Women's Field Athlete of the Week on Wednesday, had a toss of 13.95-meters to finish first out of 69 competitors.
KeAndrea Ladson qualified for the finals of the 100-meter hurdles after breaking her old school record in the event.
Ladson had three personal-best performances and one top-five finish on Friday. The sophomore qualified for the finals of the 100-meter hurdles after finishing sixth in the preliminaries. Ladson ran a 14.86 in the 100-meter hurdles preliminaries, surpassing her old mark by .06 seconds set at the season-opening CCU Invitational.
She also finished fifth in the heptathlon after compiling a personal-best 4,111 points. Ladson ended the heptathlon with a second place showing in the long jump with a leap of 5.03-meters and attained a new personal-best in the 800-meter run following her time of 2:54.03.
Upstate saw a total of five personal-bests, including the three from Ladson, fall with the women collecting four and the men one. Ladson was joined by Meagan Bailey who had a personal-best time of 2:36.09 in the heptathlon 800-meter run. Bailey also tied her personal-best of 3,730 points in the heptathlon. On the men's side, Jaleel Williams logged a personal-best time of 22.78 in the 200-meter dash.
Blake Hayes led the Spartan men with a 14th place performance in the shot put following his toss of 12.29-meters.
Upstate returns to Rock Hill tomorrow for the final day of the Winthrop Invitational with events scheduled to start at 8 a.m. Essence Jackson will be competing at the Raleigh Relays as she runs in the 800-meter race at 2:15 p.m.
