
Blackwelder Named Head Track and Field Coach

Spartanburg, S.C. – USC Upstate athletic director Lee Fowler has named Carson Blackwelder as the new head track and field coach at USC Upstate, it was announced today. Blackwelder becomes the third head coach of the Spartan track and field program.
Blackwelder is no stranger to the Upstate program as he is currently in his eighth season in Spartanburg. He joined the Spartans in 2009 as an assistant coach and has served as the associate head coach for the past five years.
The 2011 and 2012 ASUN Coach of the Year, Blackwelder has coached nine All-Conference, four Runners of the Year, three All-Freshman Team, two All-Southeast Region, one Freshman of the Year runner and one NCAA National Championship participant in Gilbert Kemboi in 2012. Blackwelder's athletes have performed in the classroom as well as Logan Ray earned a spot on the ASUN Academic All-Conference team and the women's team earning USTFCCCA All-Academic Team honors. The women's cross country team has been named a USTFCCCA All-Academic Team in 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014 while the men's cross country team earned the honor in 2012, 2014 and 2015.
"I am looking to build on the success we have had over the last few years," Blackwelder said. "Upstate is a place where cross country and track can thrive. I'm excited to move forward with the program."
Upstate begins the indoor track and field season in December.
