
Upstate Opens Play at Mimosa Hills Intercollegiate

Morganton, N.C. – Pan Paksanont, Payton Culler and Sidney Dermody each led the USC Upstate women's golf team with rounds of 78 as the Spartans opened play at the Mimosa Hills Intercollegiate on Sunday afternoon from the par 72, 6099-yard Mimosa Hills Country Club.
Upstate began tournament play with a first round 313 and is tied for seventh place along with High Point. The Spartans are well within striking distance of fourth place as five strokes separate them from Western Carolina, Winthrop and Elon.
Paksanont, Culler and Dermody are currently tied for 21st place on the individual leaderboard at 6-over par and sit six strokes back of the day one leaders. Anna Chanthaphaeng is one stroke behind the trio at 79 and is tied for 31st while Allea Hawkins rounds out the standings for Upstate tied for 60th position after her opening round 87.
Playing as an individual, Marley DeFreitas added a score of 79 and is tied for 31st place along with Chanthaphaeng.
Bethune-Cookman holds a one-stroke lead after the first round over Gardner-Webb at 303. Individually, Yudika Rodriguez of Bethune-Cookman and Winthrop's Ashley Sloup are tied for first at even-par 72.
The final round of the Mimosa Hills Intercollegiate will tee off at 9 a.m. Monday morning.
NOTABLES
- The Spartans carded their third round this season of 313 after compiling the same score in the second round of the Terrier Intercollegiate and first round of the Edwin Watts/Kiawah Island Spring Classic.
- It is the first time this season that Upstate has had five of its six players competing post rounds in the 70's.
- Each of the top four players for the Spartans contributed at least one birdie in their first round on Sunday.
- Paksanont has now tallied scores in the 70's in eight of her last nine rounds.
- DeFreitas set a new career-low round with her 79.
