Track & Field Set to Open Outdoor Campaign at 49er Classic

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – USC Upstate track and field returns to action this weekend for the first time in over a month as the Spartans open up outdoor season at the 49er Classic hosted by UNC Charlotte.
"Outdoor season is finally here, and I'm looking forward to getting the season going. We have a lot of potential on this team, and this meet will give us a good idea of where everyone is and where we need to improve," said head coach Carson Blackwelder.
Field events kick off at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, and Saturday starts off with field events at 11:00 a.m. with track events beginning at 12:10 p.m.
In addition to UNC Charlotte, the Spartans will be competing against Davidson, East Tennessee State, Marshall (women), Queens, UNC Greensboro, and fellow Big South member Winthrop.
A quartet of Spartans will also be on the coast this weekend competing in the 10K at the Alan Connie Shamrock Invitational in Myrtle Beach, S.C. Jamie Connelly and Stecy Cherono will represent the Spartans on the women's side while Jared Keklak and Jonathan Loy will be competing on the men's side. The women's 10K kicks off Friday at 6:15 p.m. with the men's 10K to follow at 7 p.m. Live results can be found here.
Last Time Out
The Spartans wrapped up indoor season with four golds at the VMI Winter Classic Feb. 12-13. On the women's side, there were 22 top-10 finishes, and five of those performances rank in the top-10 in Upstate's program history. The men had 14 top-10 finishes with five of them also ranking in the top-10 in program history. Twenty-three Spartans set a personal record at the meet.

UP Next for the Spartans
The Spartans will head to Rock Hill next weekend to compete in the Winthrop Invite Friday and Saturday, March 26-27.
