Spartans See Strong Start to Outdoor Season

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – USC Upstate track and field opened up the 2021 outdoor campaign this weekend at the 49er Classic hosted by UNC Charlotte. The Spartans earned gold in four events, including Adanma Uzor in the triple jump, Kaila Hemphill in the long jump, Angelnique Bryant in the 100m, and the quartet of Bryant, Jasmine Brown, Sharetha Odom, and Anastasia Kinlaw in the 4x400m.
The women had 15 top 10 finishes this weekend, and six of those marks rank in the program's all-time top 10. On the men's side, there were 18 top 10 finishes, with 15 of those marks ranking in the top 10 in program history.
Twenty-one Spartans also set personal bests this weekend.
"Overall, this weekend was a great meet to start the outdoor season. A lot of our underclassmen stepped up with great performances," said head coach Carson Blackwelder.

Additionally, three Spartans set personal best 10K times at the Shamrock Invite in Myrtle Beach this weekend. Jamie Connelly placed second with a program fifth-best time of 38:20.92, and Stecy Cherono was close behind with a sixth place finish time of 40:44, which ranks ninth all-time in school history. On the men's side, Jonathan Loy placed fourth with the third-best time in school history (32:17.24).
UP Next for the Spartans
The Spartans will head to Rock Hill next weekend to compete in the Winthrop Invite Friday and Saturday, March 26-27.
