Spartans Set to Compete in NCAA East Prelims

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – USC Upstate's Tony Auguste, Angelnique Bryant, and Adanma Uzor are set to compete at the 2021 NCAA Division I Men's and Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships preliminary competitions this week. The trio will be competing in the East Preliminary, which kicks off tomorrow in Jacksonville, Fla.
The preliminary competitions are scheduled for May 26 - 29. The University of North Florida in Jacksonville, Fla. will host the East Preliminary and Texas A&M University, in College Station, Texas will host the West Preliminary. The qualifiers out of these two regions will compete in the NCAA Division I Men's and Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships held June 9-12 in Eugene, Oregon.
Auguste is just the sixth men's track and field athlete from Upstate to qualify for the NCAA Prelims, and he did so in the hammer throw with a school record mark of 61.19 meters at the Charlotte Invite. He will open up the championships for Upstate in the first round of the hammer throw Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. Of 48 athletes across three seeded flights, the top 12 marks will advance to Eugene.
This will be the second NCAA prelim appearance for Bryant, and she earned the spot this year in the 100m with a time of 11.61 at the Big South Conference Outdoor Championships. The first round of the 100m is Thursday at 7:00 p.m., and the top three times from each of the sixth flights plus the next six best times will move onto the quarterfinals on Saturday at 7:05 p.m.
Uzor is just the fifth women's track and field athlete from Upstate to make an appearance at the NCAA Prelims, and makes 12 all-time appearances for the program. She will be competing in the triple jump after hitting the qualifying mark with her leap of 16.49 meters at the USC Open this season. Out of the 48 athletes across four flights, the top 12 marks will advance to Eugene.
