COLUMBIA, S.C. – Facing the highest-ranked team the program had faced in the Division I era (2007-pres.), USC Upstate baseball threatened late in its game with No. 3 South Carolina before succumbing to an early Gamecock lead in a 7-2 decision Tuesday evening at Founders Park.
The Gamecocks jumped out early with a pair of runs in the first before adding to its lead with three runs in the third and two in the fourth to build a 7-0 advantage. Putting the Spartans on the board for the first time, redshirt sophomore designated hitter
Ty Tilson hit a solo shot into the leftfield bleachers—his second homer of the season—before the Upstate pitching settled in, combining for 4.1 innings of scoreless baseball to close the game.
Freshman right-hander
Braden Consaul tossed the first 2.1 innings of the scoreless frames as he didn't allow a baserunner, stranding three inherited runners while striking out two in his longest career outing. He gave way to righties, redshirt sophomore
AJ Hacker and sophomore
Trent Hodgdon who pitched a scoreless inning apiece, striking out one and three hitters, respectively.
