SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Jafeth Martinez is continuing his academic and athletic career with the USC Upstate Spartans for the 2025-2026 season, Upstate head coach Marty Richter announced today. Martinez comes to Upstate after playing at one of the top junior college programs in the nation, Florida Southwestern State.
Jafeth was named FCSAA Player of the Week during this season while having 4 straight double-double games. Martinez averaged 7.8 points and 7.0 rebounds per game for the Bucs during the regular season while shooting 57% from the field. He was named to the 2nd team All-Conference in the highly competitive Citrus Conference.
"There is so much to love about Jafeth's game. At 6'9" with a 7'2" wingspan, he is a real presence around the rim. A shot blocker and rim shaker, he will be a fan favorite for the Spartan community. Not only does he bring toughness between the lines, he is an extremely likable young man who fits our program perfectly. We are very excited to have Jafeth for 2025!" Richter said.
Jafeth will be the first Honduras-born Division 1 basketball player to receive a full scholarship in NCAA history. This is an accomplishment that he is very proud of. Playing with honor for the people of Honduras and his beloved Garifuna community is something he does not take for granted. "I understand that I have a unique responsibility to showcase my God-given talents to represent my Garifuna people with respect. The better I play, the more strength is brought to my people."
