Track and Field Shows Success at Big South Indoor Championship

COLUMBIA, S.C. – USC Upstate track and field competed in the Big South Indoor Championship on Friday and Saturday. The meet was a great success for the Spartans, including six podium finishes, two broken school records, and 24 new personal bests. The men's team finished third overall, and the women's team finished fifth.
Day One:
Rachel Davis was the first Spartan on the podium, earning silver in the women's shotput with a throw of 13.77m. Khalif Walston earned himself a spot in the men's 400m final after breaking the school record in the prelims with a time of 47.94. Concluding the first-day success of the Spartans, the men's distance medley relay team of Jason Heusinger, Elias Harrison, Adrian Wilmot, and Sam Shimanskiy finished third on the podium.
Day Two:
Four different Spartans secured top-three finishes for the final day of competition. Rachel Davis defended her women's weight throw champion title, earning the gold with a throw of 19.21m, a new school record. Jessa Beach took the silver with a throw of 17.34m. Next on the podium was Xavier Stone, finishing third in the men's triple jump with a jump of 14.27m. Gabe Walker earned bronze in the men's weight throw with a distance of 18.09m. Addison Stone and Maureen Ortiz each earned a spot on the All-Academic team.
